Monk parakeets (Myiopsitta
monachus), who normally live in South America in
Argentina and Brazil, have escaped or have been set
free in several places in Europe and in the U.S.A.
In Bruxelles (Brussels) in Belgium there are some
colonies. There are three nests in the commune of
Uccle and four nests in the commune of Ixelles. Monk parakeets are 28 - 30 cm. long
and they are characteristic with their strongly
green back and head and gray belly. On the wings
the primary feathers are blue. They have a constant loud chatter,
usually a very harsh "eeeh-eeeh". You can hear
their voice here ,
if you have Real
Audio - otherwise you can get the
program here.
I have got the sound from this QuakerVille-site. The story about the parakeets in
Bruxelles (Brussels) - as I am told - is that a
petshopper in the 1974 went bankrupt and instead of
killing the 12 pairs of monk parakeets he set them
free. And obviously they have a great life in
Bruxelles (Brussels). Actually there are around 60
monk parakeets in Bruxelles. Place Guy d'Arezzo
(Uccle) The two nests are located at Place
Guy d'Arezzo a roundabout with a square in the
middle surrounded by trees. The nests are placed in
the top of a pylon and are plated between the
wires. They are made of little twigs ingeniously
put together. And the biggest nest with around 20
entrance holes (September 1999). The nest is a
colony of nests. In September 1999 I counted at the
same time 20 birds at the biggest nest. The smallest of the nests had in
September 1999 one entrance hole. In the storms in
the end of 1999 or in the beginning of 2000 the
nest blew down. But ongoing settlers have rebuild
the nest which in september 2000 had 3 entrance
holes. Click

(Ixelles) In the
Tenbosch park the only nest is build at one side of
a very high tree and it has not been possible for
me to see how many entrance holes there are - but I
guess 7 to 9. The nest is placed into an ivy that
grows up the tree. Nest
